Coronation Street’s Sam Robertson to stay on soap as Adam Barlow despite exit rumours

Coronation Street’s Sam Robertson has reportedly signed a new deal to stay on the ITV soap despite swirling rumours he could be making an exit due to the direction of his character Adam Barlow.

The 36-year-old has signed on to stay on the cobbles in Weatherfield for another year despite hinting he may quit over his current Fatal Attraction-style storyline.

A source told The Sun: “Sam is a huge talent and bosses are thrilled he’s signed a new contract.

“He’s got some explosive storylines coming up with Adam facing losing everything because of his deranged ex Lydia.”

This comes after the actor has said he feels the Lydia Chambers, portrayed by Rebecca Ryan, storyline engulfing his marriage is too similar to when Adam cheated with Carla Connor at the end of 2020.

He said: “Sometimes you pick up a script and I feel like I am doing that same scene as I did 12 months ago.

“At first, I was a little bit troubled by it because we did a storyline when Adam had a fling with Carla. I don’t know if it’s too soon for more of that?

“Tina and I have gone from working together and a lot of harmony to suddenly being at each other’s throats. So it’s been really tough to do that again so soon.

“Sometimes it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, it has been five and a half months that we’ve been in this storyline.

Sam returned to the Corrie cobbles in 2017 after a decade away (ITV)

“I definitely feel like it needs to recalibrate. Who is this character I’m playing now? With the confusion Adam is feeling, I’m kind of feeling that myself as an actor.”

Sam returned to the Corrie cobbles in 2017 after a decade away and is now going into his sixth year playing Adam again.

Meanwhile, amid the schedule shake-up which will put Corrie in direct competition with EastEnders, producer Iain MacLeod said it’s an “exciting time” for the show.

He said: “These stories will propel us into the hour-long era with a bang and all the characteristic drama, humour, twists and intrigue that Corrie viewers have come to expect.

“We’ve got heart-stopping, high-stakes drama for Sarah, featuring a knife-edge showdown between Adam and his tormentor Lydia, which will leave you wondering which one’s the bad guy. All of this in one big serving per night. What’s not to love?”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
