Coronation Street fans have been left shocked after discovering that mother and daughter, Audrey Roberts and Gail Platt, are not far apart in age in real life. Sue Nicholls and Helen Worth, who play them, are currently at the forefront of the ITV soap with Audrey descending into alcoholism. The soap will soon introduce a West End star, which you can also read about here.
Following dramatic scenes where a drunk Audrey staggered into an ornamental motorbike in the episode on Thursday, June 23, Manchester Evening News reported that viewers immediately took to social media to issue their concerns for the character. According to the report, one person said: "How she can go from sentimental and reasoned one second back into drunk chaotic Audrey was just so poor". In talking about the character, the subject of the actress' age quickly came up.
Writing on Facebook, one fan of the ITV soap, said: "Just checked, in real life Audrey is 78 and Gail is 71!" The two soap stars are just seven years apart in age while on-screen the pair share an almost 20-year age difference with Audrey being 82 and Gail 64.

The revelation came as a surprise to fans and another person wrote: "Wow. I didn't realise Helen Worth was that age. She looks easy 10 years younger." Meanwhile, others were quick to say that "they both look great for their age!"
Audrey and Gail's big storyline on Coronation Street has been praised for offering the two actors more screen time. Writing on Twitter, a Corrie fan praised the pair as "outstanding". In agreement, someone else commented: "There was some sweet, natural dialogue between Sue Nicholls and Helen Worth tonight, and some occasional, humour-based chat between you both would be very welcome".
On Friday, June 24, viewers will find out what happens to Audrey as she lies motionless in the barbers having been there all night. A passing Brian and Elaine hear a weak cry coming from inside. As Brian hurries off to fetch help, Stephen Reid emerges from a taxi. Breaking down the door, Stephen’s shocked to find his mum barely conscious.
Meanwhile, the Platts have called a family meeting to discuss Audrey’s drink problem with Peter. As they debate Peter’s advice, Brian dashes in with the news that an ambulance is outside for Audrey, who’s in a bad way. Stephen’s furious with the family for failing to notice that Audrey was missing all night. As he leaves for the hospital in the ambulance with Audrey, Gail’s sick with guilt and worry.
Coronation Street continues on Friday, June 24 at 8pm
