Coronation event in Glasgow as King's historic day to be broadcast on big screen

Glasgow has a packed schedule for the Coronation of King Charles III, with street parties, parades, concerts and plenty more for royal revellers.

But the main event of Scotland's largest city's celebration will take place at Glasgow Cathedral on the day that the new King will officially mark his reign.

The Cathedral will screen the proceedings, live from Westminster Abbey as they happen, on May 6 in a free-to-attend "informal" event.

"Glasgow will mark this historic occasion with a number of official events in the City," states Glasgow City Council's events page.

"Organisations and communities are encouraged to come together over this weekend and engage in the various initiatives."

Glasgow Cathedral is located near Glasgow Royal Infirmary, on Castle Street. The nearest train station is Glasgow Queen Street.

Proceedings will begin at 11am on May 6, and so it may be worth arriving at the cathedral beforehand to make sure you don't miss anything.

The Cathedral's website states: "Together with the City, we will have a screening of the Coronation as provided by the broadcasters on Saturday.

"This is informal and no reservations are necessary."

The historic venue will be one of 57 special locations chosen across the UK for official screenings of the big event.

UK Government Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said: "The Coronation will be a magical moment that brings people together to celebrate the best of Britain over a special weekend in May.

"These big screens, in major locations in towns and cities in the four nations of the UK, will make it easier for everyone to take part and have a memorable experience to mark this exciting and historic event."

The following day, Sunday May 7, the cathedral will host another event. There will be a Service of Thanksgiving taking place at 11am. This event, unlike the screening, will require prior registration, as seating within the Cathedral is set to be limited.

However, those who cannot book a space can instead attend an Official Coronation Parade in George Square at 9.45am, in which The Lord Lieutenant for Glasgow, Jacqueline McLaren will officially mark HM The King's reign.
