Cork shooting victim was getting ready to drive to work when shot by masked gunman

A dad-of-three drove himself to Cork University Hospital after he was shot in the stomach during an early morning gun attack this morning.

The 42-year-old was walking to his car at Wilton Manor near the Wilton roundabout on the city’s southside shortly after 5am when a masked gunman opened fire.

The man is believed to have been getting ready to drive to work when the horror attack unfolded.

It is understood five shots were fired at close proximity but the victim was only struck once.

The gunman then fled the scene at speed in a vehicle that was being driven by somebody else.

The victim then drove himself to the emergency department at CUH and explained what happened. He then collapsed and medics rushed him for emergency surgery.

It is understood he briefly spoke to gardai but they want to talk to him further to get more details.

Cops have begun carrying out door-to-door enquiries in the area and have already begun looking at CCTV footage from the area but no motive has been established yet for the horror attack.

The Garda Technical Bureau was also at the scene recovering evidence yesterday.

In the latest update, gardai said they were appealing for information on the movements of a silver saloon car that was observed in the Summerstown Drive, Summerstown Road, Wilton Court and Wilton Manor areas of the city.

Cops said the vehicle travelled in the direction of Bishopstown following the shooting.

They said the man's injuries are no longer thought to be life-threatening. Officers also said an incident room had been established at Togher Garda Station and they urged any witnesses to come forward.
