Cops probing Celtic match 'smoke grenade' incident issue pic of man they want to speak to

Police have issued an image of a man they want to speak to in connection with a smoke grenade incident that took place during a Celtic Europa League playoff.

Officers say the man, who is white, balding and wearing a dark jacket, could help them with their enquiries into the incident on August 18 last year as the Hoops played against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.

During the match, which Celtic won 2-0, a "smoke grenade-style device" was thrown from the crowd at Celtic Park.

No-one is believed to have been injured as a result of the projectile being launched in the stadium.

However, Greater Glasgow cops are investigating it as an incident of culpable and reckless conduct that could have led to serious injury.

Constable Daniel Brady of the Greater Glasgow Divisional Violence Reduction Unit said: “We believe this man may have information which could help our enquiries so I would urge anyone with information to come forward.”

“You can call Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 2378 of 18 August, 2021. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Taking pyrotechnics or fireworks into designated sporting events is a criminal offence.

Celtic ultimately won 3-2 on aggregate against AZ Alkmaar after playing both at home and in the Netherlands.

However, the club was bounced out of the competition by German side Bayer Leverkusen in the group stages.

Both Celtic and Rangers were later landed with fines by sporting body UEFA over the use of pyrotechnics and missiles during Europa League matches.
