A man was critically wounded while allegedly exchanging gunfire with police Saturday night in South Shore.
Officers were conducting a narcotics investigation about 6:45 p.m. when they said a man who was a suspect in their investigation ran and they pursued him, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department.
During a foot chase, the man turned and fired at officers with a gun, police said. An officer returned fire in the 2400 block of East 72nd Street, striking the man in the left side of his body.
The man, whose age hasn’t been released, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment in critical condition, police said. The Chicago Fire Department initially said the man was transported to the hospital in fair condition.
No officers were injured.
A weapon and narcotics had been recovered, police said.
Per CPD policy, the officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
