COP27 is fast approaching, with world leaders expected to flock to the host city for the climate-change conference.

King Charles, however, has struck himself from the roster after claims in the Sunday Times that the then Prime Minister Liz Truss had “ordered” him to not attend.

Speaking to the BBC, the Palace said: “With mutual friendship and respect, there was agreement that the King would not attend.”

It was reported that no royal will be attending in his place, either, despite long-term involvement and advocacy for environmental affairs.

Prince William is instead expected in New York for the Earthshot Prize awards – a far cry from last year’s full Royal Family appearance at COP26 in Glasgow.

In line with government advice, the monarch is expected to partake away from the conference city.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is to attend the Cop27 summit in Egypt next week after reversing his earlier decision not to attend.

When is COP27?

The COP27 climate-change conference will begin on Sunday, November 6 and end on Friday, November 18.

World leaders, accredited non-profits, the press, and members of observer organisations will attend the conference in and around the UN offices of the host country.

More than 2000 speakers, 35,000 participants, and 300 points of discussion are expected to pan out over the week.

Guests will also be able to download the COP27 app, which is currently in the works, to discover featured plenary events, venues, news, and even some tips on local tourism.

Where is COP27?

Egypt is the host country for this year’s annual climate-change conference.

It will be located in the coastal “green city” of Sharm El Sheikh, known colloquially as Sharm or the city of peace.

In his welcoming speech, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said: “This year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

“In the 30 years since, the world has come a long way in the fight against climate change and its negative impacts on our planet.

“The science is there and clearly shows the urgency with which we must act regarding rapidly reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, taking necessary steps to assist those in need of support to adapt to the negative impacts of climate change […] especially in Africa that suffers the most impacts.

“COP27 is an opportunity to showcase unity against an existential threat that we can only overcome through concerted action and effective implementation.”

What does COP stand for?

COP stands for Conference of the Parties, and the summit was attended by the countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
