Coogee Beach Closed To The Public As Council Investigates Hundreds Of Mysterious Black Balls

Coogee locals have been left perplexed and mystified after thousands of mysterious little black balls washed up on the shoreline, forcing authorities to close Coogee Beach until further notice.

Lifeguards found the strange, round debris on Tuesday afternoon when they began washing up on shore. With no idea what they were, environmental officers from Randwick City Council were called to collect samples to find out what they were made of, and whether they were dangerous to the public.

However, in the meantime, the council has closed the popular Eastern Suburbs beach to be on the safe side.

“Coogee beach is closed until further notice after council lifeguards this afternoon discovered mysterious black, ball-shaped debris washed along the length of the beach,” the council wrote.

“Council is investigating the origin and composition of the material, which has the appearance of dark spheres.”

Along with the beach closure, the council is also currently working on getting the black balls removed and inspecting other beaches in the local area to see whether the balls wash up other nearby shorelines.

According to The Guardian, the current hypothesis is that the unknown materials are “tar balls”. These sometimes occur after an oil spill or seepage when oil comes in contact with debris and water. However, this has not been confirmed by the council’s tests.

Until we know for sure, locals have been encouraged to not touch the black balls and steer clear of Coogee Beach.

I don’t know about you but all I can think about are those little soot sprites from Spirited Away. But I guess these balls are significantly less cute and could be dangerous.

Anyway, moral of the story is, stay away from Coogee Beach until further notice and please don’t touch the black balls.
