Video games have found plenty of ways to shock people over the years. Some have relied on graphic violence, others have pushed the limits of good taste, and a few have managed to create controversies that followed them long after their release. But one obscure PlayStation 2 title ended up in a category of its own, facing legal trouble so serious that owning a copy became illegal.
The game was called The Guy Game, and it arrived in 2004 with a concept that probably wouldn’t win many awards for subtlety. Players had to answer trivia questions correctly to gradually uncover images of topless women. It was designed to appeal to the rowdy spring break culture of the time, when entertainment often involved putting people on the spot and seeing how far they were willing to go.
