A contract for upgrade works at an artificial football pitch at Park Mains High School in Erskine has been approved.
The improvements at the 3G facility in Barrhill Road are scheduled to begin on Monday, July 17, and finish by Friday, September 15.
The green light was given for the agreement with Allsports Construction and Maintenance to be signed off at Thursday’s finance, resources and customer services policy board.
SNP council leader Iain Nicolson, who also represents Erskine, said the works will be “welcomed” by sports clubs that use the pitch.
He said: “It’s long overdue for improvement and upgrades, primarily due to wearing out the surface and ground heave, so it’s been long overdue.
“I know it’s been delayed due to procurement issues as well, but I think this will be extremely welcome.
“This administration’s investment in outdoor spaces continues with regards to 3G investment as well, which I know a lot of sports clubs are looking for.
“I know the SFA and other organisations are looking for that kind of all-weather, all-year-round facility, so it’s welcome to see this report.
“It will be greatly welcomed by all the clubs that use Park Mains and the school itself.”
A report considered by the board said nine organisations expressed an interest in the project but only two submitted a tender response by the closing date of Thursday, April 20.
Allsports was adjudged to be the most “economically advantageous” of those presented to the local authority.
Elected members authorised the head of corporate governance to award the contract and its sum of £311,420.10, excluding VAT, to the company.
This includes an additional five per cent contingency for any unforeseen works.
The report added: “A capital budget of £1.2 million has been made available for the upgrading of artificial pitches in Renfrewshire and the costs of this contract will be met through this budget.”
It was recently revealed an extension is needed for Park Mains, which would increase its capacity from around 1,600 to 2,000 – at a cost of between £27m and £30m.
In the meantime, modular classrooms are due to be installed during the next school year provide flexibility for the school.
