Telecommunications companies in Europe will be able to continue charging customers for intra-EU calls until 2028, according to recent decisions made by European Union (EU) regulators. The move to extend the deadline for eliminating such charges has been met with mixed reactions from consumers and industry players.
Since June 2017, telecommunications providers within the EU were required to offer “roam-like-at-home” services, which meant that customers could use their mobile phones to make calls, send texts, and use data while traveling across EU member states at no additional cost. However, this regulation did not apply to calls made from one country to another within the EU.
