Consultations taking place for development of active travel route to Tonna Hospital

Consultations have been launched by Neath Port Talbot Council for the development of a safe and active travel route between the village of Tonna and Tonna Hospital this month.

If given the go-ahead, the scheme would aim to deliver improvements to the current pedestrian route between Tonna and Tonna hospital, not only connecting the village with the hospital, but also linking a residential area to local shops as well.

The plans came after an audit showed that the route had "critically failed due to the lack of suitable crossing points for pedestrians." It is hoped that the proposal will now address these issues while also bringing the route up to the standards in the Active Travel Act Guidance (ATAG).

The proposal would include widening work to the existing footway, improvements to the crossing facilities at junctions to give priority to pedestrians, by the installation of raised crossings, as well as improvements to the crossing at the roundabout by Dulais Fach Road by installing a new raised roundabout.

Other plans could see the relocation of the route's bus stop, and a reduction in the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph, with the introduction of a transition zone between the 20mph section and 60mph section.

Cllr Leanne Jones of Resloven and Tonna said: "We have had a very mixed response to these plans so far with some people thinking it's good and others thinking it's bad. As such I've encouraged all residents to take part in the consultations so that they can make their voices and opinions heard." The consultation will now be open to residents until June 30, with all encouraged to take part.
