Building work has started on a new block of 13 apartments which developers say will be “an important new addition” to the Bristol Harbourside skyline.
The development, located on a derelict brownfield site adjacent to the Wapping Wharf neighbourhood, is due for completion in autumn 2023.
Locally-based John Perkins Construction - which has worked on many landmark structures in the city, including the recent restoration of historic boatyard Underfall Yard - has been appointed by Simon James Homes as the principal contractor for the project, named Dockside Apartments.
The apartments will be spread over six floors, with a below-ground car park. The superstructure of the building will be composed of a steel frame, with an infill system. The finished building will feature a varied façade, of brick, render, metal, and cement board cladding.
Oxford Architects has designed the scheme with MDA Consulting providing quantity surveyors.
An official ground-breaking ceremony took place to celebrate the project getting underway.
Simon Crocker, managing director at Simon James Homes, said: “It’s fantastic to break ground at Dockside Apartments and start work on a stunning new addition to the thriving Harbourside area of Bristol.
“We’ve already been working with John Perkins Construction for more than a year to ensure the development can stand proud amid the Harbourside skyline.”
Rupert Perkins, managing director of John Perkins Construction, added: "For this project, we’ve put together a team with a broad depth of experience in constructing best-quality high-rise residential units. We’re able to draw on our values of open, honest, collaborative working to deliver something special within our hometown of Bristol.”
