CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court bar association (HCBA) has asked Punjab and Haryana high court Chief Justice that an advocate with less than 15 years of continuous regular practice before this high court may not be considered for elevation as judge.
“It has been requested to the Chief Justice for taking necessary steps for filling the vacancies out of the lawyers enrolled with Punjab and Haryana high court bar association, Chandigarh, for the past 15 years and have practiced for the same period exclusively before the HC,” says the letter sent to the Chief Justice by the bar association. The communication sent to the Chief Justice has been signed by Santokhwinder Singh Grewal, president of the HCBA and other office bearers. The copy of the resolution passed by the HCBA has also been attached with the letter.
As per the HCBA resolution, the members who have been practicing before the HC for the past several years have made great contributions towards the institution, and only they have the right to be considered for elevation as judges of this high court. “It would be great injustice to the members of the bar if any person who does not belong to the states of Punjab, Haryana and UT Chandigarh and has not practiced before this HC for 15-20 years and has no contribution towards this institution is recommended for elevation,” says the resolution passed by the HCBA.
The decision was taken in a meeting of the HCBA that was called on Wednesday to discuss the issue of filling the vacancies of judges in the high court.
