St Mirren winger Conor McMenamin will undergo surgery after a reoccurrence of a pre-existing injury.

The Northern Ireland internationalist did not travel to Spain with his team-mates due to a patella tendon issue.

McMenamin, 28, had played through the injury last season before being sidelined. He then returned to action in March where he helped the Buddies secure European football with a fifth-place finish in the Scottish Premiership.

However, after suffering a reoccurrence of the injury on international duty, McMenamin has missed pre-season as he prepares to go under the knife to correct the issue.

No timeline has been set for a return to action but with a UEFA Conference League second qualifying round tie around the corner, the injury comes as a significant blow to preparations.

McMenamin's absence from the pre-season trip to the Pinatar Arena sparked speculation over his future at the club, however, it's understood it was simply through injury the player was not involved.

St Mirren will face either Icelandic outfit Valur or Albania side Vllaznia in the UEFA competition later this month.

A club statement confirmed: "St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Conor McMenamin will undergo surgery for a patella tendon injury.

"A pre-existing injury, the 28-year-old played through the pain barrier last season but was eventually ruled out for a period with the injury. Conor returned to action in March to play his part in our European qualification.

"The Northern Ireland forward didn’t travel to our pre-season training camp in Spain after returning from international duty having suffering a reoccurrence of the injury.

"We wish Conor a full and speedy recovery."
