Conor McGregor warned fourth fight with rival Dustin Poirier would be "weird"

Conor McGregor has been warned that pursuing a fourth fight with heated rival Dustin Poirier would result in a "weird" event.

UFC legend Chael Sonnen was discussing McGregor's next options when he noted that while there is a story to be told between the pair, it's a tougher sell given McGregor was stopped twice in a row.

McGregor was cleanly knocked out in their rematch last January at UFC 257, before the slightly more controversial UFC 264 ending which saw him cleanly break his leg while stepping back from a kick.

“Poirier vs Conor works," Sonnen said in a YouTube video. "I understand that but part four is a little weird.

"Particularly when two and three didn’t have a single round won by Conor, it was very uncompetitive.”

It remains to be seen if the Irishman will be granted his wish against Poirier, and with both men currently walking around well over 180lb, would they want to cut to lightweight or do it at a third limit.

Their first meeting was at featherweight in 2014, which McGregor won within minutes, before they reignited their feud last year at lightweight.

McGregor has a history at welterweight in the promotion, while Poirier has flirted with making a move up after losing his two efforts at the undisputed lightweight title.

“Conor’s got to give us a little more info too," Sonnen continued. " He’s putting pictures out, he’s 190lb.

“Is he planning on stopping by 170? Is he planning on going back to 155? It just depends on the day that you talk to him.”

One thing that Sonnen does know with confidence is that McGregor has the ability to make a fight big regardless of who his opponent is set to be.

“Conor has been for a meaningful period of time and will live the rest of his career on the same unique spot that he monopolises, which is, whatever he does, is going to work.

“Does Conor have the same pursuit of getting back to a world championship? If that answer is yes he has to pick a division.”

McGregor had appeared to be eyeing up an immediate title shot upon his return, but with a bout between champion Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje now all but set for UFC 274 that seems unlikely.

Oliveira has expressed interest in facing McGregor, having spent a huge portion of his UFC career unable to earn big money fights.

But it now seems more likely that the Irishman will face a different challenge, which could be a number of possible opponents.

Poirier in an unprecedented tetralogy would surely be a massive fight, as would a trilogy with old rival Nate Diaz in what could be the American's last UFC fight.

Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson are both also seemingly in the running, although their losing streaks and relative lack of name value compared to Diaz would make them less likely rivals.
