Connor Goldson bemoans shoddy Rangers set-piece defending against PSV

Connor Goldson admits Rangers shot themselves in the foot against an impressive PSV side with some shoddy defending.

While the Dutch side carved open the Ibrox defence with some intricate passing for the first goal, the second came from poor marking at a set-piece.

And the vice-captain was adamant the team will have to look again at how Luuk De Jong was able to find the space to get his header away in the box.

He said: "The first goal is good football from them but the second is a set-piece. We have to look at it. It can't happen. We have a 2-1 lead. Over the 90 minutes we actually defended well as a whole team but you can't give away goals from corners.

"It was a good game of football. The fans stuck with us. I know sometimes it's hard when opponents come here and have the ball - our crowd don't like it but sometimes you have to suffer to get there and I think we did that well tonight.

"They are a good side, they play good football and have dangerous players. At times we have to suffer together and it will be the same away. But we will get chances over 90 minutes there and we have to take them."

Given the tough time suffered in the Champions League last season, you might wonder if Rangers' players might show signs of trepidation at another shot at Europe's elite competition. Not a bit of it as far as Goldson is concerned.

He said: "Returning to the competition means everything to us. We had a bad year in the Champions League last year and we are desperate to rectify that and put a better account of ourselves.

"The journey we have been on in the last few years in the Europa League to then get into the Champions League and give the account of ourselves we did was disappointing so we are going to give everything we can to sort that."
