A Connecticut man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman while attempting to steal her vehicle. The incident took place at a Dunkin' Donuts drive-thru in East Haven.
According to the East Haven Police department, the suspect, identified as a 28-year-old man, pulled into the parking lot in front of the victim's car on Tuesday, October 1. He then exited his vehicle, climbed into the passenger side of the woman's car, and demanded her keys.
When the woman refused to hand over her keys, the suspect began punching her. The victim, who was four months pregnant, managed to escape the vehicle and seek help inside the restaurant.
An employee at the drive-thru witnessed the assault and alerted two coworkers. They intervened and restrained the suspect, who was attempting to flee in the victim's vehicle.
Police arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect, who continued to resist. During the arrest, he bit a medic's hand. The vehicle in the suspect's possession had been reported stolen previously.
The suspect is facing multiple charges, including Breach of Peace, Assault on Emergency Medical Personnel, Robbery, Reckless Endangerment, Assault on a Pregnant Person, Assault, Interfering with an Officer, and Larceny of a Motor Vehicle.
He is currently held on a $250,000 bond for the charges, along with outstanding arrest warrants totaling $475,000. The East Haven Police Department praised the Dunkin' Donuts employees for their quick and courageous actions in handling the situation.
The suspect was transported to court for arraignment on Wednesday morning.
