Conference League: Monaco take first-leg lead in Poland

Monaco won 3-2 away at Gornik Zabrze in the first leg of their Conference League play-off. Mika Biereth opened the scoring before Lamine Camara doubled Monaco’s lead after the break. Paris Brunner then restored the visitors’ advantage after the Polish side had twice reduced the deficit. Filipe Luis's side take a one-goal lead into next Thursday’s second leg at the Stade Louis-II.

In the Europa League, Benfica and Besiktas took first-leg leads against Aarhus (3-1) and Kauno Zalgiris (3-0), while Trabzonspor lost to Ferencvaros (0-1) in Mohamed Salah’s first competitive start.

In basketball, France lost to Serbia (90-87), despite 10 points from Victor Wembanyama.

In cycling, two-time French world champion Julian Alaphilippe announced his immediate retirement at the age of 34.

Finally, Carlos Alcaraz, who has been sidelined with an injury since April, has confirmed his return at the US Open.

In Cincinnati, Arthur Fils and Flavio Cobolli will meet in the semi-finals, while in the women’s draw, Jessica Pegula will face Iga Swiatek.
