A Toxteth care home has been ordered to shape up after questions were raised about its safety.
Following an inspection in March, Granby Care Home on Selborne Street, has been told it requires improvement by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The Liverpool Council -run site provides accommodation and personal care for up to 30 people who are in need of short term care and support.
A targeted inspection took place at Granby Care Home to follow up on specific concerns the CQC received about the service and was prompted in part due to “concerns received about visiting procedures in relation to covid-19.” At the time of the inspection 18 people were living in the care home which had been previously rated at its last inspection almost five years ago.

A report by the CQC said while risks to health and wellbeing had been identified prior to residents’ admission, person centred care plans “lacked information and guidance about how specific risks needed to be managed.” It was said that on the first day of the inspection, some aspects of the environment were unsafe and placed people at risk of avoidable harm.
These issues were addressed immediately. Cleaning records lacked information about which areas of the home had been cleaned and how often according to the CQC findings.
While staff had access to enough supplies of personal protective equipment, some were seen not wearing masks correctly and clean aprons were stored in open areas next to waste bins. Among the other issues identified were the fact records were not in place to ensure 'as required' medicines were administered when needed.
The provider's governance systems had failed to identify issues found in relation to care records. Despite a series of concerns, the CQC said it received positive feedback from people and family members about the level of care and support for both aspects of the service provided.
Family members said people's mobility and independence had improved due to the support from staff and external health professionals and residents were safeguarded from the risk of abuse.
A spokesperson for Liverpool Council said: “It is very disappointing for Granby Hub to move to a ‘requires improvement’ rating from ‘good’ and we will be submitting a report of action to CQC by 26 June in response to the findings and recommendations. Some of the issues identified during the inspection were addressed immediately, particularly around record keeping and safety.
“The team at Granby pride themselves on giving an excellent service having vast experience in supporting people to rebuild their confidence so that they can return safely to their own homes. It was therefore welcome that CQC’s report highlighted the positive feedback from family members and that this was reflected in our ‘good’ rating for caring and ‘effectiveness’.”
