Concern as 'homes nearly flooded' during heavy rain in South Belfast

Residents in South Belfast feared they would need to sandbag their homes after roads flooded following heavy rain this week.

After heavy downpours on Monday evening, sections of Rosetta Road, Cregagh Road and Ravenhill Road flooded with the Upper Knockbreda Road dual carriageway being forced to partially close.

Lisnasharragh Green Party Councillor Brian Smyth said that he was contacted by a number of concerned residents living in the area who feared their homes were at risk of being flooded on Monday due to Rosetta Road flooding and the water reaching their property lines.

He said: "Following the heavy rain on Monday I had a number of residents contact me fearing that their homes would be flooded due to the amount of water approaching their homes in the Rosetta area.

"This was not the only area where there were issues with the dual carriageway having to close due to flooding and there being large build-ups of water on the Cregagh Road, Ravenhill Road and Ardenlee Avenue.

"Ten years ago in 2012 a number of homes in these areas suffered from flood damage and residents are concerned that this could happen again if measures are not put in place to address extreme weather and rainfall, which is likely to become more common in the future.

"The Department for Infrastructure needs to step up and develop climate proofed solutions for addressing flooding and excess waste water as a lot of the problems we are seeing is due to an over reliance on tarmacing which is only making these issues worse."

A Departmental spokesperson said: “The Department received reports of flooding in the Knockbreda/Rosetta area during a period of heavy and prolonged rain on Monday evening.

"Operatives were dispatched immediately and cleared the gullies, which had become blocked by fallen leaves and debris, and the water began to recede soon after.

"The Department has been in attendance at this location again during today’s heavy rain to ensure gullies remain clear from fallen leaves and will also carry out a follow up investigation to ensure that there are no further blockages.

"The public can report an issue with blocked gullies, roadside drainage or ponding on the adopted road network at www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/report-road-drainage-fault
