Concern as Dundee drivers dodge level crossing barriers while trains approach

Police in Dundee say they are concerned at a recent trend of drivers ignoring stop signals at a local railway level crossing despite the threat of approaching trains.

The British Transport Police (BTP) says it is aware of four incidents of "deliberate misuse" of the level crossing at Broughty Ferry in the space of two days. Drivers are allegedly failing to stop when crossing signals are flashing red - indicating that a train is imminent.

Network Rail says seven serious incidents of misuse have been recorded since the start of the year. Failing to stop for a level crossing signal is a criminal offence and can land drivers with penalty points and a fine or a prison sentence - if they're lucky enough to escape with their life.

Steven Griffin, level crossing manager for Network Rail in Scotland, said there was "no excuse" for ignoring instructions to stop at the junctions when required. He added: "We are urging everyone to follow safety instructions to avoid injuring themselves and others.

“We work closely with British Transport Police to raise awareness of the dangers of misusing crossings and with local councils and other stakeholders to educate the public on how to stay safe near the railway.”

Shona Robison, local SNP MSP for the Dundee City East constituency, said: "The recent increase in incidents at the Broughty Ferry Level Crossing is concerning. This Level Crossing is an important asset for the local community and misuse presents a serious risk to everyone’s safety.

“It’s vital that drivers are alert, take notice of the crossing signal flashing red and stop their vehicle immediately to avoid putting themselves and others in danger.”
