'Comprehensive' investigation remains ongoing into Isle of Man TT race deaths

A "comprehensive investigative process" into five deaths at this year's Isle of Man TT Races remains ongoing.

The organisers of the Isle of Man TT Races launched an investigation into each of the incidents from the 2022 event. Five racers were killed during the fortnight of races making it the worst loss of life at the meeting since 1989.

ACU Events Ltd launched the investigation on June 13 to "understand the circumstances, establish key learning and implement changes as soon as possible". Welsh rider Mark Purslow died after a practice crash at Ballagarey while Northern Ireland's Davy Morgan suffered fatal injuries during the opening Supersport race.

Sidecar driver Cesar Chanel passed away as a result of injuries sustained in a crash in race at Ago's Leap. His passenger Olivier Lavorel was rushed to Aintree Hospital with critical injuries suffered in the same incident.

Race organisers wrongly named Mr Lavorel as the racer who died in the crash and later put a statement which said: "An initial identification procedure was conducted using established procedures and would appear to have resulted in a mistaken identification."

A dad and son sidecar pairing also lost their lives in another crash at Ago's Leap. Roger and Bradley Stockton, from Crewe in Cheshire, died after an incident during the second lap of Friday's race..

The worst death toll at the TT was in 1970, when six riders lost their lives. TT Clerk of the Course Gary Thompson MBE BEM said: " As an organisation we promise to take any actions that can help improve safety and undertake this at the earliest opportunity."

The full statement from ACU Events Ltd said: "ACU Events Ltd has confirmed that a comprehensive investigative process is being followed for each of the serious incidents that occurred during TT 2022. The investigations systematically analyse every aspect of these incidents using established root cause methodology.

"A multi-professional team involving partner organisations reviews the events that occurred and recommendations on the way the event will be delivered in the future will be made."

Mr Thompson added: " After every incident we work tirelessly to understand the circumstances, establish key learning and implement changes as soon as possible. Any fatality during an event is a tragedy."
