Depression and the gut system seem to be remotely connected, but factually they are not. The gut microbiome has an impact on mental health and several studies have worked on this. There are trillions of bacteria in our gut system and several of these are directly linked to depression.
A 2022 study published in Nature Communications journal identified the association of thirteen microbial taxa, including genera Eggerthella, Subdoligranulum, Coprococcus, Sellimonas, Lachnoclostridium, Hungatella, Ruminococcaceae, Lachnospiraceae, Eubacterium ventriosum and Ruminococcusgauvreauiigroup, and family Ruminococcaceae with depressive symptoms. "These bacteria are known to be involved in the synthesis of glutamate, butyrate, serotonin, and gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), which are key neurotransmitters for depression," researchers from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands have explained.
