Commuter chaos as A1 closes following crash involving vehicle transporter and car in Gateshead

Commuters were caught up in road chaos following a major crash involving a vehicle transporter and a car on the A1 northbound.

Emergency crews attended the scene on the A1 Northbound near the Lobley Hill interchange following reports of a crash between a large vehicle transporter and a small car at 5.25pm (December 22).

Personnel from Northumbria Police found that a large vehicle transporter and a small car which had collided and subsequently closed all three lanes.

The North East Ambulance Service also attended the scene alongside a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance.

National Highways North East said that lanes 1 and 2 (of 3) were closed for purposes of recovery following the RTC.

The diversion was in place via the exit and entry slip roads at the A692 by Northumbria Police. As a result, there were long delays of 45 mins on the approach.

Thankfully, officers in attendance found that nobody involved had sustained serious injuries.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "We were in attendance on the A1 at Junction 68 following a call at 5.25pm.

"There was large vehicle transporter and a small car which had collided but there were no serious injuries. Initially there was a full closure but lanes have since opened."

A NEAS spokesperson said, "We received a call to 999 at 5.31pm to reports of a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the A1 north at junction 68.

"We sent two Hazardous Area Response Teams and a doctor from Great North Air Ambulance who found two patients with minor injuries on scene.

"They treated one at the scene and the second made alternative plans for transport to hospital for further treatment."

The last of all three lanes re-opened at 7pm.
