Committee investigating January 6 Capitol riot holds private interview before Friday's hearing — here's why that is important

The committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot has privately interviewed a British filmmaker who was documenting former US president Donald Trump's final weeks in office.

Alex Holder has handed over footage that includes videos of Mr Trump and former vice-president Mike Pence during the 2020 campaign trail, from before and after the January 6 insurrection.

What's in the documentary?

The series director released a statement on Wednesday (AEST) where he says the footage from his three-part series, Unprecedented, was captured over a series of weeks at the end of Mr Trump's re-election campaign.

His statement said Mr Holder had "unparalleled access" to Mr Trump as well as his family members and colleagues, including:

  • Ivanka Trump
  • Eric Trump
  • Donald Trump Jr
  • Jared Kushner
  • Mike Pence.

He said the footage was taken in the White House, at Mar-A-Lago and behind the scenes on the campaign trail, both before and after the January 6 insurrection.

Snippets of documentary footage have already been released, with CNN airing a clip of Mr Pence being shown an email by a member of his staff that the filmmakers say includes the draft House resolution demanding that Mr Pence invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr Trump from power.

There's also footage from CNN on the documentary, of Mr Trump in March 2020, after the insurrection.

"A very small portion, as you know, went down to the Capitol, and then a very small portion of them went in.

"But I will tell you they were angry from the standpoint of what happened in the election, because they're smart, and they see, and they saw what happened. And I believe that was a big part of what happened on January 6."

In another clip, the former president's daughter, Ivanka, tells the filmmaker: "As the president has said, every single vote needs to be counted, and needs to be heard. He campaigned for the voiceless."

Who is Alex Holder?

Mr Holder is a British filmmaker and the founder of AJH Films. He is best known for his award-winning film, Keep Quiet.

He has released a number of statements relating to the Unprecedented  documentary, where he says he "could never have predicted" that his work would be subpoenaed by Congress.

Holder has private interview with committee

Mr Holder was privately interviewed by the House committee investigating the January 6 insurrection hours before the fifth hearing.

"This morning I met in person with investigators for the January 6 Select Committee," he said.

"As I've stated previously, I have provided the committee with all requested materials and am fully cooperating with the investigation.

"I have no further comment at this time, other than to say that our conversation today was thorough and I appreciated the opportunity to share more context about my project."

Mr Holder has not said what was discussed in his interview with the committee, but the panel has subpoenaed footage from the project.

How long did Holder spend with the Trumps?

The footage captured the final six weeks of Mr Trump's re-election campaign.

Throughout that time, Mr Holder's legal counsel, Russell Smith said, the filmmaker had full editorial control over the documentary.

"The Trumps also did not request any contractual right of control, or even review, so there is none."

Will we ever see the documentary?

Yes, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Discovery+ has bought the three-part series.

In Wednesday's statement, Mr Holder says the series has been purchased by "a major streaming service" and is scheduled to be released in 3-parts this summer.

Considering it's summer in the US at the moment, it's likely to be released in the next couple of months.

Mr Holder has stressed that he had full editorial control over the series and "was not compensated in any way by the former president, his family or staff".
