The Washington Commanders are off in Week 14. For Washington fans, that means you can watch other teams without ending your Sunday in disappointment. The Commanders are 4-9 and have lost four in a row, six of seven, and nine of their last 11 games.
It’s difficult to believe this team began the season 2-0.
Although not officially eliminated, Washington has zero chance of making the playoffs. So, while the final five weeks (four games for the Commanders) may not mean anything in terms of the 2023 season, it could significantly impact 2024 — specifically, the 2024 NFL draft.
Heading into Week 14, the Commanders hold the No. 4 position in the upcoming draft. While we know it’s hard for fans to root for their favorite team to lose, Washington fans know all too well these late-season wins mean nothing for the following season. The best outcome for the Commanders is for them to lose their final four games — and root for others to lose.
Arizona (3-10) currently holds the No. 3 overall pick and is also off in Week 14.

The Patriots already won, which is good news for the Commanders
The Commanders defeated the Patriots back in Week 9. It was Washington’s last win. Heading into Week 14, New England held the No. 2 overall pick. The Pats surprised the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night and still hold the No. 2 overall position (3-10). Washington certainly hopes Bailey Zappe keeps playing quarterback for the Patriots, and they can steal another couple of wins down the stretch.
Saints over Panthers
The Panthers have one win and have all but locked up the No. 1 overall pick. They’re bad. Unfortunately for Carolina, that pick is going to Chicago to complete the trade for Bryce Young. The Saints have five wins, one more than the Commanders, so it’s better for Washington that New Orleans wins another game or two in case the Commanders somehow fall into a win.
Bears over Lions
Washington is 4-9, while the Chicago Bears are 4-8. If the Bears lose Sunday, by strength of schedule, will hold the No. 4 pick, moving Washington back to No. 5. The Bears are playing better football than the Commanders right now, so you’d think they pick up a win or two down the stretch. An upset win over the Lions in Week 14 would be great news for Washington.
Jets over Texans
The Texans are good. Did you ever think — before the season — the Jets would be the big underdog here? New York has four wins, the same as Washington, and the Commanders play the Jets on Christmas Eve. It’s Washington’s best chance at another win. So, the Commanders really need the Jets to pull off the upset Sunday to keep some distance between the two teams.
NYJ (4-8) currently holds the No. 6 overall pick.
Giants over Packers
The Giants are 4-8 and have played much better lately. Currently, they hold the No. 7 overall pick. On Monday, they face the red-hot Green Bay Packers. New York can win this game, although it’s unlikely. Washington needs the Giants to win another game or two.
Titans over Dolphins
The Titans currently have possession of the No. 8 overall selection. They are among five teams with four wins currently. Hoping for Tennessee to win at Miami on Monday night may be a bit too optimistic. There’s always next week.
