The Washington Commanders continue to cast a wide net in search of their next head coach. On Monday, the Commanders requested permission to interview Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

Slowik began his NFL coaching career in Washington, as a video assistant on Mike Shanahan's staff in 2010.

Slowik is the sixth known candidate Washington has requested to interview for its vacant head coaching position. Slowik, 36, is no stranger to Washington, having spent three seasons under former head coach Mike Shanahan as a defensive assistant from 2011-13.
After the Shanahans were fired, Slowik took an interesting route back to the NFL. From 2014-16, he worked as an analyst at Pro Football Focus before returning to the NFL with Kyle Shanahan in 2017 as a defensive quality control assistant. Throughout his six seasons with the 49ers, Slowik served in four different roles, finishing his time with the 49ers as the offensive passing game coordinator in 2022.
In 2023, the Houston Texans hired San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as head coach. Ryans brought Slowik with him as Houston’s offensive coordinator. In his first year with the Texans, Slowik played an instrumental role in the development of No. 2 overall pick, QB C.J. Stroud, in Houston’s turnaround from one of the NFL’s worst teams to a division winner.
The Texans went from No. 31 in offensive DVOA in 2022 to No. 14 in 2023, according to FTN.
