The Washington Commanders knew upgrading the offensive line was a priority this offseason. Washington has scouted the upcoming draft class heavily, meeting formally with over 20 prospects at the NFL combine.
When the NFL’s legal tampering period opened Monday, the Commanders went straight to work, agreeing to terms with former Giants OL Nick Gates.
Shortly afterward, Washington wasn’t done, adding former Chiefs right tackle Andrew Wylie to a three-year deal. Like Gates and any other player agreeing to terms over the next two days, the deal cannot be signed until Wednesday.

Wylie’s contract is for three years and $24 million.
The 6-foot-5, 304-pound Wylie is 28 and signed as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Michigan in 2017 with the Indianapolis Colts. After bouncing around his rookie season with the Colts, Cleveland Browns and Chargers, he signed with the Chiefs in December 2017 and was promoted to the active roster in January, where he has been since.
Over the last five seasons, Wylie has appeared in 71 games, making 59 starts. He has played left guard, right guard and right tackle. With the Commanders unsure where Sam Cosmi will play, seeing where Wylie lines up will be interesting. If he projects as the right tackle, then Cosmi will project inside to guard.
Wylie had been linked to Washington since the Commanders hired his former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy last month.
