Matt Lucas declared he is “passing the baguette to someone else” after revealing he is quitting the Great British Bake Off.
The 48-year-old comedian has been a co-presenter of the popular Channel 4 show, alongside Noel Fielding, for the past three years and 51 episodes. He replaced Sandi Toksvig, but has now decided to depart for pastures new.
He has cited a heavy workload for his surprise decision, explaining that he wouldn’t be able to present both the Bake Off and Fantasy Football League. He works on that programme with Elis James after Sky decided to bring back the iconic comedy football show this autumn, 18 years after it left our TV screens.
Lucas released a statement, writing: “Farewell Bake Off! It’s been a delicious experience and I can’t imagine a more fun way of spending my summers, but it’s clear to me that I can’t present both ‘Fantasy Football League’ and ‘Bake Off’ alongside all my other projects.
“So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else. I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent.
“I wish whoever takes over all the very best and I can’t wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won!”
Baking judge Prue Leith was quick to praise Lucas for his contribution to the TV institution, writing: “I have absolutely loved working with you. Thank you for bringing so much laughter and un to the tent.”
Fellow judge Paul Hollywood added: “You will be missed. Good luck with everything you’ve got planned. You’ve been awesome.”
