Colwick neighbours welcome new CCTV over concerns of 'disruptive and shouty' behaviour

Neighbours have welcomed the prospect of new CCTV cameras to catch 'troublemakers'. Two CCTV cameras will be placed off the A612 Colwick Loop Road, near the new Sainsbury's supermarket, and on the corner of Lockerbie Street and Vale Road, Colwick, if plans are approved by Gedling Borough Council's planning committee on January 11.

The camera posts have been proposed by officials at the borough council, in the hope they will help prevent and detect crime and anti-social behaviour nearby. People in the area spoke in favour of the measures.

Retired Greg Parkin, who is 86 years old and lives in Vale Road, said he had several cameras at his house. "I’m really happy about the new camera because if any more trouble was going to happen it would catch anyone," he said.

"Because it’s a small, quiet, normal residential area the camera would help people feel safer if anything was to happen.” Others however thought the cameras could help catch problem drivers as well as troublemakers.

Karen Johnson, 49, who works at a cob shop and lives in Colwick, suggested the cameras could help tackle anti-social bevaiour. She said: “Some houses do tend to have a few drinks and are loud, are a bit shouty and are disruptive to their next-door neighbours and those behind them."

She added: "That corner [on to Vale Road] is terrible though because people drive so fast. They go up and down at night like a race track but hopefully they’ll see the camera, get scared and slow down.”

Lindsay Rhodes, 38, a mum-of-one who lives off Vale Road, said “I haven’t seen any antisocial behaviour but I’m more concerned about how fast people drive around the corner, there have been several crashes and no cars should be parked outside the cob shop so it’s really dangerous.

"I hope the camera catches the speedy drivers. I would prefer there to be speed bumps rather than a camera though.”

Planning officers have advised councillors on Gedling Borough Council's planning committee to approve the two separate plans. They added the proposal would have an acceptable impact on the area visually and would contribute to reducing the fear of crime.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke, said: “We know how important it is for our residents to feel safe, wherever they are in the borough, and one of the ways we’re making it safer is by improving the number of CCTV cameras in crime hotspots.

"We’ve recently upgraded CCTV equipment in parts of Calverton, Arnold and Carlton and we’re continuing to look at where else in the borough needs CCTV as part of our commitment to help reduce anti-social behaviour, crime and the fear of crime.

"We were also recently successful in applying for £250,000 from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Streets Fund to support crime prevention measures in Netherfield and Colwick and this funding will also be used to install new CCTV equipment as well as increasing the number of Neighbourhood Wardens in those areas.”
