Ahead of Sunday’s pivotal AFC South matchup with the Houston Texans, the Indianapolis Colts announced that they’ve released running back Evan Hull from the 53-man roster.
The team also placed Jaylon Carlies on injured reserve. These two moves then opened up roster spots for DeForest Buckner and Cameron McGrone, both of whom were activated from injured reserve.
With Jonathan Taylor sidelined in recent weeks, the Colts signed Hull from the practice squad to the active roster to bolster the running back depth. Behind Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson, Hull was the third running back available on game days.
Hull appeared on offense only in the Miami game, playing one snap in that contest as a blocker.
With Taylor available for Sunday’s game against Houston, from a roster construction standpoint, there isn’t much of a need to carry four running backs.
Hull was a fifth-round pick by the Colts in 2023. He missed most of his rookie season with a knee injury. This summer, he was competing with Goodson for that final running back spot on the 53-man roster. Throughout the preseason, Goodson showcased more juice with the ball in his hands.
Hull came to the NFL as a very experienced pass-catcher, leading all running backs during the 2022 college season in receiving yards.
I would imagine that after Sunday’s game, the Colts will try to get Hull back on the practice squad.
