The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that they’ve signed tight end Albert Okwuegbunam Jr. to the practice squad.
After the New York Jets signed cornerback Jaylin Simpson off the Colts’ practice squad last week and added him to their 53-man roster, Indianapolis had an opening, so no corresponding cut has to be made to make room for Okwuegbunam.
Okwuegbunam is listed at 6-5 – 258 pounds and has appeared in 30 NFL games, which includes seven starts. He’s a former 2020 fourth-round selection by the Denver Broncos out of Missouri.
The Broncos would trade Okwuegbunam to Philadelphia at the start of the 2023 season. He would appear in four games with the Eagles last year, playing 57 snaps.
Okwuegbunam signed a one-year deal this past offseason to remain with the Eagles for the 2024 season, where he was on the injured reserve list from Weeks 1-9 before being released by the team recently.
Over his career, Okwuegbunam has played 754 offensive snaps, 421 of which came during the 2021 season. He’s caught 54-of-73 passes at 10.1 yards per catch with four touchdowns, spending about one-third of this time in the slot.
By PFF’s grading system, Okwuegbunam graded out as an “average” run-blocker in 2021, with a grade of 58.0 that ranked 49th out of 85 eligible tight ends that season.
