Colts positions of need: PFF’s top running backs in 2025 NFL draft

Jonathan Taylor is still under contract in 2025, but bolstering the depth at this position should be on GM Chris Ballard’s radar.

For one, in today’s NFL where many teams have a secondary running back to lean on to help take some of the workload off of the primary back’s shoulders, the Colts don’t really have that.

When available, Taylor is playing the bulk of the offensive snaps each week. It’s fairly common for backup Trey Sermon to play five or fewer snaps in a game and for Tyler Goodson to not even see the field. That’s a hefty workload for Taylor week in and week out.

In addition that aspect, there isn’t much of a steady passing game threat at this position. Pass-catching and pass-blocking isn’t what Taylor hangs his hat on, while to put it simply, there is less playmaking ability on the field when Taylor isn’t out there.

There have been instances where having that element out of the backfield looks like it could be quite beneficial to Shane Steichen’s offense and he’s attempted to get the current backs involved, but the consistency hasn’t been there, resulting in a missing element that this offense could have.

With Taylor’s contract up after the 2026 season, it also wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a backup plan already on the roster in case he does end up elsewhere at that point. After all, it is the GM’s job to plan ahead.

Given that the Colts still have Taylor, the team doesn’t necessarily have to spend an early round pick on this position, but they should certainly bolster the depth.

So with all of that said, let’s take a look at Trevor Sikkema’s top running backs in the 2025 draft class. In parenthesis is the player’s overall ranking on Sikkema’s big board.
