Colts elevate 2 from practice squad ahead of game vs. Texans

The Indianapolis Colts announced that they’re elevating cornerback Chris Lammons and kicker Spencer Shrader from the practice squad ahead of their matchup with the Houston Texans.

Each week, a team can elevate up to two players from the practice squad to the active game day roster. Each player can be elevated up to three times during the season. After that third time, they either have to be signed to the 53-man roster or released.

With only five cornerbacks on the 53-man roster, Lammons provides some added depth at a position with question marks. Defensively, Lammons is a backup option at the nickel, but most likely, his role will come on special teams where he has nearly 1,000 career snaps.

With Matt Gay listed as questionable, the elevation of Shrader–while not definitive quite yet–tells us that Gay probably isn’t kicking on Sunday.

Gay has been recovering from a hernia injury that he suffered in the team’s preseason finale against Cincinnati. This injury did require surgery. Gay did not formally practice this past week although Shane Steichen did mention that he has been doing some kicking.

Shrader was signed by the Colts following April’s draft after going undrafted out of Notre Dame. He appeared in the first and third preseason games, making all four extra point attempts and both field goals, including a 56-yarder against the Bengals.
