Colts announce they signed K Spencer Shrader to practice squad

Following roster cuts, the Indianapolis Colts continue to build out their practice squad, announcing that they’ve signed kicker Spencer Shrader.

Shrader was signed by the Colts following April’s draft as an undrafted rookie out of Notre Dame. Oftentimes teams will carry a second kicker during training camp so their primary kicker doesn’t have to handle every attempt throughout the summer.

During the preseason, Shrader would appear in the first and third games. On field goal attempts, both of which were attempted against Cincinnati, he would go 2-for-2, including making a 56 yarder. On extra points, Shrader was 4-for-4.

He will now have the opportunity to continue developing on the practice squad for the season. While Matt Gay took some lumps this preseason–making just one of his four field goal attempts–his job as the starting kicker was never in jeopardy. Both Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard have expressed the confidence they have in him.

“No,” said Ballard on Wednesday when asked if he had any concerns. “Good kicker. Really good kicker.”

As of Thursday morning, the Colts still have four spots available on their practice squad. To stay up to date with who they’ve signed, click here.
