Colt McCoy had a message for J.J. Watt after retirement announcement

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman J.J. Watt surprised everyone on the team with the announcement that this is his final NFL season. He is going to retire from playing in the NFL after the season is over.

While Watt knew it was going to happen, teammates didn’t believe him and it was a shock when the news broke Tuesday morning.

Quarterback Colt McCoy did not hear it from Watt. He was sitting at breakfast with Watt when he saw the news on television, which led to a conversation about the decision.

“I sat down, and we were just talking shop,” McCoy said Wednesday. T’hen I look at the TV and it’s like J.J. Watt’s retiring. I look at him and I’m like, ‘What is this?’ He was like, ‘Yeah.’ Then our conversation went from there.”

McCoy had a message.

“We’ve got two more games, so don’t fully go there yet,” he said.

McCoy wants to see Watt give it a full effort in his final two games. The Cardinals are on the road this week to take on the Atlanta Falcons and close the season on the road against the San Francisco 49ers.

McCoy said it was his responsibility to try and keep Watt on task for the final two games.

“My job at breakfast sitting with him was to make sure he knows we got two more games left.”

Based on Watt’s play the last couple of games, that probably won’t be an issue.
