Early last month, as the sport turned its full attention to the Week 1 slate, there were plenty of derisive comments directed at the slate of college football games. There was only one quality, ranked-vs.-ranked matchup and a decided dearth of games which you thought would have College Football Playoff implications.
As it so often does, however, the schedule on paper did not turn out to be such a lackluster affair in practice. Mississippi and Louisville staged a thriller in Nashville that probably helped elevate the Cardinals firmly into the ranks of contention in the ACC while giving the Rebels a quality win. There was everything that went on with the ending of Michigan and Western Michigan, which will be a discussion for several months. Boise State looked again like the class of the Group of 6 in pushing Oregon to the brink, Coach Prime delivered a big upset at Georgia Tech, Auburn won just down the road in Atlanta thanks to the literal final inch and UMass managed to make history in a positive sense for the first time in ages.
