Collectable 50p coins worth up to £140 could be in your pocket

A whole host of 50p coins have been cited as "rare" and worth much more than their face value, with some in circulation worth up to £140. And, while the coins are rare, you could just have one in your pocket or lurking in an old wallet or purse.

Various events or topics have been commemorated on our currency. However, it appears that as specially printed or minted cash is limited in number, the items are not just an interesting visual but, as collectors seek them out, their value is often considerably higher than the value of the note or coin on which they are displayed.

It has been highlighted that a number of rare 50p coins in circulation could be worth looking out for. In particular, a coin released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759. This particular 50p displays the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden on the tails side with the Queen's face as normal on the other side. The Royal Mint estimate around 210,000 were made. According to Liverpool Echo, while Coinhunter estimated the coins are worth around £140 back in December, one sold for £150 on eBay last month.
