COIMBATORE: AIADMK MLAs from Coimbatore district have alleged that their party candidates for urban local body polls are being harassed by election officials.
AIADMK MLAs led by former minister S P Velumani complained to district collector G S Sameeran on Friday that officials turn away AIADMK candidates citing frivolous reasons and non–existent rules, when they come to file nominations.
Velumani said some election officers ask for an affidavit from the candidates for urban polls stating that they do not hold any positions in rural local bodies while some insist that initials should be suffixed and not prefixed.
These conditions are not laid by election commission, Velumani said. The former minister along with eight other AIADMK MLAs from Coimbatore district visited the collectorate to submit the complaint.
