Cody Gakpo transfer update as Liverpool consider 'next Luka Modric'

Liverpool’s first team squad returned for pre-season training on Monday with 19 players reporting back to Kirkby, including new signings Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay. The Reds are well prepared following their business in the transfer market.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have already added Carvalho and Ramsay, along with the £85m capture of Darwin Nunez to bolster their ranks ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. Newly-appointed Sporting Director Julian Ward has received plaudits for his work in his first transfer window in the role.

While the understanding is there will be no more incomings, the Reds continue to be linked with players across the continent and beyond.

Liverpool have held talks with the agent of PSV forward Cody Gakpo, according to reports.

Gakpo scored 21 goals and added 15 assists in 46 appearances for the Dutch side last season as they came second in the Eredivisie and won both the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield. The 23-year-old, who is a versatile attacker but preferably plays on the left, has also won seven caps for the Netherlands since making his debut at Euro 2020. He is expected to be an important part of their squad for this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

Gakpo is valued at around £35m and is also reportedly attracting interest from Arsenal, Manchester City and Leeds. The Dutchman would be another youthful addition to Klopp's front-line as they look to fill the void left by Sadio Mane's departure to Bayern Munich.

Liverpool are reportedly interested in pursuing a move for Croatian starlet Luka Sucic.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who plies his trade for Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, scored eight times and provided four assists across 44 games last season. He was a regular in Salzburg’s run to the Champions League last 16, where they gave Bayern Munich a fright before being heavily beaten in the second leg of the tie.

Sucic has been likened to Croatian icon Luka Modric and he has already won three caps for his country. He is viewed as a potentially-elite prospect and is valued at around £18m.

The Reds have a good relationships with the Red Bull group, having signed Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino from their stable of clubs over recent years. The positive relationship could pave the way for Sucic to move to Anfield in the future.

Nottingham Forest have ‘agreed personal terms’ with Neco Williams as they continue to plan for their return to the Premier League after a 23-year exile, according to reports.

The Reds are expected to allow Williams to depart this summer, after impressing on loan at Fulham during the second half of the season. He scored twice in 15 games as he helped the Cottagers to promotion.

There is an acceptance that Williams, who joined Liverpool’s academy aged six and has made 33 appearances in total, is in search of regular first team football ahead of representing Wales at the Qatar World Cup this winter.

And according to Football Insider, Forest identified Neco Williams as a target and have now made their move. The report states they are set to give Williams a ‘lucrative long-term contract’. The Welsh international, 21, has also attracted interest from numerous other clubs including Fulham, Newcastle, Burnley and Southampton and is valued at around £15m.
