Cody Gakpo deal hailed as former Liverpool favourite recalls being booted out of Goodison Park

It's time for your Liverpool FC morning headlines on Thursday, December 29.

'I keep looking at the fee' - Pundit left stunned by how much Liverpool have paid for Cody Gakpo

Liverpool's capture of Cody Gakpo has been hailed as 'great business all-round' by Craig Burley, who is stunned by the transfer fee.

World Cup star Gakpo will join the Reds next month on a five-and-a-half-year deal from PSV Eindhoven, increasing Jurgen Klopp's attacking options in the absence of injured pair Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

The versatile Gakpo can play on the left or centrally and has nine goals to his name in 14 Eredivisie appearances so far this season. The 23-year-old's stock was expected to rise considerably following a successful individual performance at the World Cup that saw him score in all three group stage matches for Holland. Reports suggest Gakpo will cost an initial £37m - and former Scotland international Burley thinks the Reds have got themselves a steal.

Speaking to ESPN , he said: “I look at this player and I think it’s one of the great bits of business, I really do. I keep looking at the fee. I keep looking at the fee and thinking, ‘no, this is not 2022, this is 2012, 2010 or 2009’. The guy is 23, when I look at him as a player and the left-hand side is his best position, but I look at this guy, who for me could play in several positions if need be and could adapt. ."

Gary McAllister was 'kicked out' of Goodison Park by Bill Kenwright after last-minute Liverpool win

Gary McAllister has revealed he was once ‘kicked out’ of Goodison Park by Everton chairman Bill Kenwright after a last-minute Liverpool victory in the Merseyside derby.

Sadio Mane was the match-winner at Goodison back in December 2016, clinching a narrow 1-0 victory for Jurgen Klopp’ s side courtesy of his 94th minute tap-in. And McAllister was in attendance that day, along with fellow Liverpool legends Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush.

McAllister famously scored a last-minute winner over Everton at Goodison when Liverpool ran out 3-2 winners in April 2001.

So coming into the lounges after the Blues’ 1-0 loss to Liverpool back in December 2016, the last thing Kenwright wanted to see was reminders of Everton’s previous woes against the Reds. Greeted by the sight of Dalglish, Rush, and McAllister, it proved to be too much for him to bear.

“We were in (Goodison) after a game once, I think it was when Mane did it as well,” McAllister recalled at the Forever Reds Christmas lunch at Anfield. “Five or six seasons ago, he scored a last-minute winner too.

“Bill Kenwright walks in (to the lounge after the game) and Kenny (Dalglish), Ian (Rush), and myself were all stood together.

“He says, ‘Look at you! Look at the f*****g three of you! You three are the same! Every f*****g time you come here. Not just Mane. You’ve done it! You’ve done it! You’ve done it! (Now) Get out!’”
