Bhagat Ram Talwar occupies an unusual place in both the history of India's freedom movement and the secret history of World War II. He helped Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose escape from British India in 1941 and guided him through the frontier region into Afghanistan. Within a few years, he was running espionage operations that involved the Germans, Italians, Soviets, British and Japanese. His British handler was Peter Fleming, the wartime intelligence officer whose brother Ian Fleming would later create James Bond, modelled after Peter.
