CoD DMZ’s new stealth mechanic makes sneaky pacifist runs a reality, MW4 devs say

Call of Duty is re-entering the extraction shooter space, for real this time, with DMZ mode in Modern Warfare 4 later this year.

Modern Warfare II’s DMZ beta sort of felt like CoD dipping its toes into what Escape From Tarkov made so popular. This time around, MW4’s DMZ is a dive right into the deep end in comparison. A new map, new systems, and a bigger commitment to the mode spell excitement for CoD players.

While I didn’t get to play DMZ in late May when I visited Infinity Ward, I did see an informative presentation about it and talk to some of the developers, including multiplayer creative director Geoff Smith and multiplayer technical designer Jack Hoppus, who told me that the team has learned and added a lot since the beta version in 2022 and 2023

Since CoD’s first try at extraction, the landscape has changed quite a bit with several big games in the genre releasing, including ARC Raiders and Marathon. Smith says, like any creator or artist, it’s about consuming as much as it is creating, and then iterating.

“I think it’s just required for our craft,” Smith said. “If you’re good at your craft, you need to play everything. You’re making movies, you watch every movie you possibly can. You’re writing novels, you read as much as you can. So, we absorb it all. We like things, we don’t like things, we debate things, we analyze things.”

“Creativity kind of comes from that shared absorption of things, and then eventually, a different thing spits out of your brain,” he said. “I think creativity works that way. So, there’s a bunch of nuances from, ‘this one does PvE really well in a narrative story setting, this one does PvP really well and has a lot of interesting openings and environmental puzzles.’ It’s really kind of bringing it all together and trying to find what works for us versus the foundation of it, so it’s kind of this ultimate military adventure.”

From the presentation, it’s clear that the mode is now way more of a full operation than what the beta was. DMZ’s beta had many fans, and content was added over seasonal drops during MW2, but it felt like more of an add-on versus this new DMZ that the devs call “a full-fledged game” inside MW4.

A long list of additions and improvements includes a base of operations where you can unlock installments like a 3D printer, a gunsmith, and a merchant to purchase gear from. Lost operators can be bought back as part of a new feature called M.I.A., so if you have the cash, you can regain your high-level characters lost in battle. And each individual operator will now also have their own skill tree with unlockable traits to enhance and improve gameplay.

While a game like CoD is always fun with friends, there are a lot of solo players out there who wish to simply log in, play the game alone, and log out before bedtime. DMZ supports teams of three, but solo players will also be able to drop in and experience the world for themselves, using proximity chat or staying stealthy throughout.

“There’s a bunch of nuances that we’re still finalizing, but we’re very, very aware of all the different [player types],” Smith said.

Hoppus also explained that there’s a new Tourniquet item, which will allow players to self-revive instead of having to rely on teammates to get you up, further supporting solo play if you so choose.

“I think that we have these systems in place that, even if you’re a solo player, you’re going to be able to do all the content,” Hoppus said. Matchmaking will be based on squad size, so if you’re a solo player, you will match up with other solos. Of course, players can use proximity chat to team up or betray one another, so every game will be its own adventure.

DMZ now also has a stealth feature, which will allow players to disengage or hide from AI enemies, similar to how a mechanic might work in games like Assassin’s Creed, where a visual indicator will tell you you’re about to be spotted and you can go prone to avoid engagements.

“We have some groups in the playtest internally that try to do all of the content in DMZ in stealth,” Hoppus said. “And it’s surprising the lengths that you can do, the high stakes areas in the map that if you fully go in stealth, you can get around. You can definitely try to do full runs [without fighting].”

Another new tweak in MW4 DMZ is what’s called Dynamic Operations (in addition to Story Missions and Free Roam), which adds even more variety to game-to-game adventures for both solo and group play, and Smith said it “came out of watching people do contracts a lot” in DMZ’s beta.

“So, what if you just wanted to play the game and just wanted to play contracts every single match?” Smith said. “Can we make that replayable ad nauseam? And so there’s a million different nodes and different places that something can happen, and then they plug in a different thing at that location.”

The hope is that this will add variety from match to match, even if you’re just free roaming to scavenge gear or find valuables to sell for cash, so you can rescue a lost operator.

DMZ will launch with Modern Warfare 4 later this year on Oct. 23, and more will be added to the mode with seasonal content throughout the year.
