Co Fermanagh teacher ‘overwhelmed’ after raising £24,000 following cancer battle

A Co Fermanagh teacher who raised over £24,000 for a local cancer charity has said he was ‘overwhelmed’ by the response to his campaign.

Former St Michael’s College Enniskillen teacher Connor McBarron raised the incredible sum for Cancer Fund For Children, after his own cancer battle which he is still feeling the long-term effects of.

The fundraising efforts ran alongside a campaign from former Irish rugby captain Rory Best, who walked 180 miles from Daisy Lodge in Co Down to Co Mayo, stopping in Enniskillen along the way.

“I have to say I was very humbled to see the reaction of people,” Connor told MyFermanagh.

“It’s a phenomenal sum and I never would have thought we would even be able to raise a tenth of it.

“It was very overwhelming, and I didn’t do it on my own, I had plenty of help as well.”

Connor revealed that it was the biggest single contribution to former rugby player Best’s campaign, and added that he would be making another visit to Enniskillen this summer to thank people for their efforts.

He lives in his native Fermanagh with his wife and four children, and has had to give up his passion of teaching due to the long-term effects his sarcoma cancer has had on him

Connor added: “It was wonderful to be able to piggy back on Rory’s efforts.

“Many people think that once a tumour is removed that that’s your cancer journey over, in my case that’s certainly not true as it leaves a lot of wreckage behind.”

“People see me out and about and think that man is 100%, he is well recovered.

“I spend most of my afternoons lying asleep and managing chronic long-term pain - it is truly challenging.”
