Clyde angered after controversial Alloa penalty costs them vital win

Clyde boss Jim Duffy admits he doesn't know if Scott Taggart's penalty for Alloa crossed the line or not, but he insists the Wasps shouldn't have been awarded it in the first place.

The Bully Wee were heading for a massive three points at New Douglas Park after they fought back from Kieran Offord's opener for the Wasps to lead 2-1 thanks to strikes from Euan Cameron and Jordan Allan.

However, Ross MacIver went down in the box in the 69th minute under pressure from Peter Grant and the Wasps were awarded a penalty. Taggart stepped up and his effort crashed off the underside of the crossbar and bounced back out.

Eventually, referee Alan Newlands award Wasps the goal and denied Clyde what would have been just their third win of the season.

Duffy - whose side are three points ahead of bottom club Peterhead, having played a game more - said: "I'm not convinced it was a penalty in the first place. I thought it was a very harsh decision.

"I think the player puts his head back and Peter goes to head it. I don't think it's a real clash of heads. If anything it is just two players competing for the ball.

"It's very rare to see that given as a penalty. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen it.

"In terms of it being over the line, it's impossible for us to see.

"The linesman would have to have eyes like a hawk. He was convinced it was in.

"I was more aggrieved about the decision to give the penalty more than whether the penalty was over the line because that is something we can't see."

Despite being pegged back, Duffy was still pleased to pick up a point against their high-flying opponents ahead of a Hogmanay trip to Queen of the South.

He added: "We played some terrific football. We scored some really good goals against a very good side.

"Alloa have been in the top four a lot of the time this season, they are a strong side, so to compete with them the way we did over the 90 minutes was great, considering we had two or three boys who were ill.

"The players gave everything and, as a manager, that's all you can ask for.

"In periods of the game I thought we played some good football.

"I don't think we'll need to pick them up for Queen of the South. We've got a point against a team in the top half of the league."

Meanwhile, Duffy is hopeful of adding to his squad in the January transfer window, although he admits that is proving difficult.

He said: "I spoke to the board a couple of weeks ago and we've been looking, making enquiries.

"It is not easy for a number of reasons. The substitutes in squads now can be nine on the bench and teams can use five so clubs are not overly keen. A lot of teams have B teams and they keep players for that.

"Our position in the league is not always ideal to try and encourage players to come but we are making enquiries and if we can strengthen the squad we will try and do that."
