Club rugby round-up: Wins for Currie Chieftains, Heriot's Blues, Marr, Hawick & more

Currie Chieftains made it three wins from as many games yesterday, beating Musselburgh 46-7 to go two points clear at the top of the Premiership table.

That margin of victory suggests a comfortable afternoon for the league leaders, but it was inflated by four late tries, which came after the home side had failed to turn pressure into points during a spell on top.

“It was a lot tougher than the scoreline looks,” Currie coach Ally Donaldson accepted. “Obviously we ran away with it at the end. When it was 17-7 and we were down to 14 men on our own line and we managed to hold them out, that was the defining moment in the game.”

Edinburgh Accies had been the only team other than Currie to win their first two games, but they had to be content with a losing bonus point in a 24-18 loss at Heriot’s Blues. Heriot’s are now two points clear of Accies in second place, and two behind the Chieftains.

Marr are in the fourth and last play-off place after their 35-30 win at Glasgow Hawks. The Troon team were on a high after beating champions Hawick last week, but they had to fight all the way before eventually claiming the winning score five minutes from time through prop Ali Rogers.

"The pleasing thing is that last year we wouldn't have won that," Marr coach Kenny Diffenthal said."It was great to see in the last three or four minutes the guys really working hard for each other.”

After that loss to Marr - the first time in 18 months they had tasted defeat - Hawick were desperate to get back on the winning trail, and that showed in a merciless 61-7 demolition of Kelso.

Selkirk claimed their first victory of the season with a 65-35 victory at home to Jed-Forest, who are now the only team left without a win to their name.
