Phil Parkinson admits it is “proving difficult” for Wrexham to add to their squad before the summer transfer window closes.
The Red Dragons have signed three players so far, but would like to add at least two more before the window closes on Tuesday, September 1. Wrexham have been linked with several players throughout the summer, and Parkinson revealed that some potential deals have come “very close” to completion before eventually falling through.
Sports Illustrated understands that Wrexham chief executive Michael Williamson has led the club's transfer activity this summer ahead of Steve Nickson's appointment as the club's inaugural sporting director. Nickson will officially begin his role on Sept. 2, the day after the transfer window closes.
Until then, time is running out to complete any further deals. Wrexham are understood to be targeting a center back and an attacker before deadline day, although Parkinson admits it has been more difficult than expected to get those deals over the line.
Parkinson Sends Wrexham Transfer Warning
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of Wrexham's home match against Watford, Parkinson was asked about the club's transfer activity with the deadline fast approaching.
“It's proving difficult, I have to say, it really is,” the Wrexham manager admitted. “We are trying, but we've got a decent squad. I'm not saying we won't succeed, but the clock is ticking. It's just not easy for various situations.
“Like I've been saying all summer, I want to make sure our focus is on the ones we've got in the building. We've got a good squad. We'll need these players back fit, the ones that are injured, and we'll see where it takes us next week.”
When pressed on what he still wanted to add before the window closes, Parkinson said: “I don't really want to talk about positions. I've said all along that ideally we want a couple more players in the building. Now, we've got very close to a couple of those deals happening and for one or two reasons they have fallen down. But that is part of the highs and lows of the transfer window.
“Of course, like everybody, we'd like a few more signings. If we get them, great, but if we don't, there are opportunities and players who haven't figured in the first couple of games, who are eager to show everybody that they can make their mark here.”
