It should not come as a surprise there is strong public support for nurses taking industrial action.
A poll for the Mirror shows a clear majority back the RCN’s decision to go on strike for the first time in its 106-year history.
The findings reflect not just the widespread appreciation of NHS workers but also the dismay that nurses are so poorly paid.
Some cannot afford the bus to work and turn to foodbanks to feed their families.
A significant majority of those polled also believe the Government has the money to give public sector workers the pay rise they deserve.
Rishi Sunak has said the nurses’ demands are “unaffordable”.
His words would carry more weight if Jeremy Hunt had not found the resources in his Autumn statement to give a tax cut to bankers.
And this government would easily have been able to afford pay rises had it not crashed the economy with the mini-Budget or lost billions through its fraud-riddled Covid loan scheme.
If the Conservatives value the NHS they should value the staff who work for it.
Chester draws
The result of the Chester by-election was a vote of confidence in Keir Starmer’s rejuvenated Labour.
It also showed voters have lost faith with a Tory Party which has crashed the economy and ruined our public services.
The Conservatives can keep changing their leader but it will not change the public from concluding they are no longer fit to govern.
The fact that Sajid Javid yesterday joined the long list of Tory MPs standing down at the next election is evidence that this is a party that long since passed its shelf life.
Mane event
It's the clash of the big cats when England take on Senegal on Sunday night.
The Three Lions will lock claws with the Lions of Teranga for a place in the last eight.
Here’s hoping Gareth Southgate’s team roars its way to victory.
