Sending ocean robots into the eye of a hurricane might seem like mission impossible. Before marine technology firm Oshen successfully despatched three of their 1 metre-long C-Star sailboats into Hurricane Humberto, it was something nobody had attempted before with this size of vessel.
These are the kind of breakthroughs being achieved by marine autonomy startups, established industries and multinational powerhouses that have selected Plymouth as their base of choice. And many of those breakthroughs are being made possible by graduates from the University of Plymouth – in Oshen’s case, for example, they include the staff who wrote the software guiding the hurricane-defying robots.
